Local OrganizersYvonne Galligan is Professor of Comparative Politics at Queen's University Belfast where she leads the Centre for the Advancement of Women in Politics. Her research focuses on gender politics and democratic institutions. Her recent publications include 'States of Democracy: Gender and Politics in the European Union' (contributing editor, Routledge) and Politics and Gender in Ireland: The Quest for Political Agency' (contributing editor with Fiona Buckley, Taylor & Francis). Her interest in gender equality in political representation has led her to giving expert advice to a range of regional, national and European-based institutions, and to shaping the public debate on gender equality on the island of Ireland. She is also Director of Queen's Gender Initiative, and in this capacity has led the University engagement with Athena SWAN since 2009. Her experience in advocating for gender equality in a political setting has transferred to higher education, where she promotes the equal participation of women with men in higher education structures and institutions. She is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Dr Victoria Montgomery is a Research Fellow within the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy at Queen’s University, Belfast. Her research interests lie in the inter-related areas of identity politics – specifically minority religious expressions and mobilisations of identity – multiculturalism, integration and citizenship, and of course the impact and consequences of such minority identity expression and mobilisation at both the national and transnational levels. She has organised several conferences and seminars on behalf of the Centre for Advancement of Women in Politics at Queen’s University, and has convened panels at international conferences on the themes of religious minority expressions of identity and gender and multiculturalism. She authored the Ireland section of the successful book series: Yearbook of Muslims in Europe. Leiden NL: Brill, edited by J. Nielsen, S. Akgonul & C. Moe, from 2009-2013, and most recently contributed an article entitled, ‘Multicultural Ireland?: Muslim Women and Integration in Ireland’ to a special issue of the Irish Political Studies journal (IPS) on the topic of Politics and Gender on the Island of Ireland (September 2013). Dr Montgomery was previously employed as the Research Fellow on the FP7-funded project: Processes Influencing Democratic Ownership and Participation (PIDOP). She is also the administrator for the Centre for Advancement of Women in Politics, a research centre within the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy at Queen’s University, Belfast.
